The second annual Art Jam is only days away and the final preparations are starting to take place for the event being held at the Walton Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 27 at 6 p.m.

According to the Art Jam website, all tickets for the concert part of the event have sold out. But Clay Carmichael, representative of the Blackbelt Benefit Group and Grow Selma, said that shouldn’t keep people from coming who still want to enjoy the atmosphere and the art.

“The art show is free admission, so everybody is welcome to come,” Carmichael said.

“Anybody can come and buy drinks and take a look at the art … [even] if you just want to hang out.”

Carmichael said the art show is a huge part of Art Jam, and he is looking forward to the turnout of those supporting the local artists.

“We mainly did that so we could showcase the artists, so if someone is looking to buy a piece of art, then they can come in and buy a piece of art without having to pay entry into the concert,” Carmichael said.

“We’re happy to have them, and [the art] makes it look good in there.”

Not only does art amp up the Walton Theatre during events like this, according to Carmichael, art can just be an asset for anything or anyone.

“It’s important to us because art is something that everybody should know a little bit about,” he said. “It enhances your intellectual ability.”

Art Jam is also a great experience for the artists, who get to put their work on display for people to see and even purchase.

“It’s important to them … to make what they do successful,” Carmichael said.

Art Jam is continuing the trend of showing the community how important the arts are, by showing off more than just one kind.

“The whole arts and entertainment district of downtown … is on to something. So we want to keep supporting that,” Carmichael said. “That’s another plus about the event, and our events all together. We try to do architecture, arts, food and music and put that all into one.”

Along with local artists, Art Jam will featue musicians like Destiny Brown and The Band of Heathens, who will open up for the main performer Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers. They will feature local foods and treats prepared by chef Emily Hancock. Food for the event will be provided by Spencer Farm, Fiddlehead Farms, Petal Pushers and Mark’s Mart.
