Older kids also deserve holiday presents

It won’t be long before kids will be waking up on Christmas Day, ready to tear open the presents they’ve received.

Thanks to local charities, such as the Salvation Army, children who would have otherwise not been fortunate to get gifts this season will receive them. While we appreciate the extra labor our local nonprofits put in during the holidays to make sure those under 12 get what’s on their wish list, we worry about the older kids that could be potentially overlooked.

We understand that the younger children are known to get excited about the holiday season, but they doesn’t mean the older ones are less deserving of the same joy that comes with receiving a present.

Even adults are anticipating what gifts have their name on it this year, so we’re sure that the older, low-income children are thinking the same.

We can only hope that more groups will see that and make more of an effort to include the youth older than 12 in their gift giving. All ages should get a little holiday cheer.
