So much has changed for the Majestic Voices, a local gospel group, since it first began about 23 years ago. But throughout the years, it has remained true to its original intent to serve God through music.

Majestic Voices is comprised of Selma residents Erica Maxwell-England, Nikita McMillan, Shemika Morgan and Jerneral Bell. While the members aren’t blood-related, their love for Christ unifies them as if they were sisters.

“Over the years we have developed an unbreakable bond,” McMillan said. “We are sisters in Christ. We are overshadowed with joy uplifting the name of Jesus together.”

Established in 1991 under the name Junior Angelics, Majestic Voices was inspired by its parents’ gospel group — The Angelic Harmonizers.

Originally composed of eight members, Majestic Voices has matured over the years and is in the process changing its title to its new name.

The gospel singers have overcome a lot of difficult situations in their musical careers, one of the hardest being the death of founding member Shoshana Thomas, who died Sept. 11, 2008, according to Morgan.

“We realized [that] without obstacles, there would be no testimonies to tell God’s people,” Morgan said.

“He has led, guided, molded and shaped us into mature Christians. He has worked in our lives to sanctify us for his service.”

Through it all, the group has been able to reach goals it set early on, including producing a CD. They have performed in Selma; Miami, Fla.; Starkville, Miss.; Chicago, Ill.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and other cities across the nation.

With so many successes behind them, including serving as the main performers at Selma’s Christmas Tree Lighting in early December, Majestic Voices is eager for what the future will bring.

“Prayers and many sacrifices have kept us joined as a unit,” England said. “If it had not been for the Lord on our side, where would we be?”
