The Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated the film Thursday for four Golden Globe Awards, including best motion picture.

Director Ava DuVernay was nominated for best director, while the film’s star, David Oyelowo, was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr.

DuVernay’s nomination makes her the first African American female to ever be nominated for best director.

The HFPA also nominated the film for best original song, “Glory” by Common and John Legend.

“Selma” failed to receive any nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but it bounced back strong with the nods from the HFPA for the Golden Globe Awards.

The motion picture tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s campaign for equal voting rights. The film depicts how King’s actions and the march from Selma to Montgomery changed history forever.

The majority of “Selma” was filmed in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia, but some of the scenes were shot in Alabama, including those that feature the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma where marchers were brutally beaten by law enforcement officers in 1965. The scenes in Selma were shot in June of this year.

The 72nd Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.

The movie is scheduled for a limited release on Christmas day, but moviegoers in Alabama will have to wait until Friday, January 9 to see the film.
