Selma has so much history that sometimes it’s hard to remember everything that has happened in the Queen City.

The April 1865 Society, Inc. is helping tell Selma’s story to the hundreds of visitors that flock to the city each year.

The society is placing historic markers around Selma, which will tell visitors where they are and what history happened in that spot.

With the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and 150th anniversary of the Battle of Selma upcoming, thousands of people will travel to Selma next year. By that time, at least 10 historic markers will be placed through town.

The first marker went up in July at the Battle of Selma reenactment site.

The second marker was unveiled Tuesday morning at the St. James Hotel, detailing information on the hotel, General J.H. Wilson and Benjamin Sterling Turner.

These are pretty high tech too.

The plan is for each marker to have a QR code that will take you to a website that can be accessed through a phone.

On the website, there will be a video of a local person reading about the history of that particular location.

Although the museums in town do a fantastic job of telling our story, they aren’t always open, so the markers will give out-of-town guests a chance to explore the city on their own and learn about our historic city.

Selmas place in history is undeniable. Most visitors come to our city wanting wanting to embrace that history and the new markers are only going to make that easier.
