The Selma Police Department has sacrificed so much to keep our streets safe, so we are beyond supportive of the Selma City Council’s decision to honor three of its officials for their years of service.

Lt. Johnny King, detective Beauty Benjamin, and crossing guard Patricia Morrison deserve to be recognized for all that they have done for Selma.

They each have dedicated more than a decade to their current profession. When you consider the long work days, dangerous circumstances and heartbreaking situations these individuals face each day, their longevity is outstanding.

But whether the term of service is short or long, our respect and appreciation for the job they do never ceases.

The presentation held at the latest council meeting should remind the public to thank the Selma Police Department for their dedication to protect the residents of Selma.

A simple thank you can go a long way, and they need to know we care.
