The Selma man who reportedly robbed and murdered a 58-year-old male in August appeared in court for a preliminary hearing Thursday.

District Judge Bob Armstrong found probable cause on the suspect, John Murray Jr., who was 18 at the time of the incident.

Murray was bound over to a Dallas County Jury and will appear before it in January, according to District Attorney Michael Jackson.

“We’re trying to bring closure to the deceased’s family,” Jackson said.

Murray admitted to murdering and burglarizing Stephen Sizemore on Aug. 21 at the victim’s home on Dallas County Road 74, according to officials with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

Murray made the confession when he turned himself over to the authorities, but said he could not recollect the exact date as to when the incident occurred, said Sgt. Mike Grantham, with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators learned Sizemore sold items from his home, and Murray was a regular customer. It was reported that the two had no issues with one another in their previous dealings.

Murray told law enforcement that he originally planned to purchase items from Sizemore, but when he got there, “things didn’t go like he wanted. One thing led to another,” according to Granthum.

Less than $100 was taken from the home, Granthum said.

It was reported that Sizemore and Murray did not have any issues with one another in their previous dealings.

Deputies discovered Sizemore’s body Aug. 20 at 6:40 p.m. after family called saying Sizemore was on the floor of his home unresponsive. Grantham said Sizemore sustained a gunshot would to his upper body, with the house in disarray.

Authorities said Murray has an extensive juvenile record.

After the suspect goes before a grand jury in January, he will be appear in court for an arraignment and trial date.
