Cedric DeAngelo Oliver, who allegedly murdered a 27-year-old man Oct. 19, appeared in court this week.

Oliver received a $500,000 bond Monday during a hearing at the Dallas County Courthouse, according to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson.

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested last Wednesday and charged with one-count of first-degree murder.

“We wanted to make sure the bond was high given the circumstances of the killing,” Jackson said. “We’re very pleased with bond.”

Selma Police responded to a call concerning shots fired on the 600 block of Johnson Street at approximately 5:50 p.m. and found Daniel Barnett, 27, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Barnett received aid from Care Ambulance but died before he could be airlifted to a trauma center, according to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with Selma PD.

The incident prompted a death investigation that led Selma Police to believe it was homicide.

After further investigation, the department learned that the incident might have stemmed from a previous altercation between Oliver and the victim, according to Lt. Curtis Muhannad.

Barnett’s friends reportedly attempted to rob one of Oliver’s friends the day before the alleged murder, according to Muhannad.

Detectives believe both groups encountered each other Oct.19, which led to the altercation and Barnett’s death.

The Selma Police Department issued a warrant for Oliver’s arrest last Tuesday, and he turned himself in to the department the following day.

Oliver could be facing from 10 years to life in prison without parole or the death penalty and fines up to $60,000.

Jackson said his legal team takes the case especially serious considering the circumstances.

“We want to help bring closure to the victims family,” Jackson said.

Oliver is set to appear in Dallas County District Judge Bob Armstrong’s court Dec. 9 at 9 a.m.  Anyone with information about the case should contact the Selma Police Department Major Crimes Unit at (334) 874-2125.
