Shots rang out Friday at a sober candlelight vigil held in Orrville County Road 3 for Jamira Barley, the victim of a Sept. 19 car accident.

Mary Murray, who has a granddaughter who went to high school with Barley, witnessed the shooting that disrupted the vigil and sent attendees running.

Murray had just arrived to the vigil with the handmade cross her granddaughter requested for the vigil, when she noticed two young men get into a disagreement.

“When I saw guns start to come out, I went back to my vehicle and dialed 911 and I told them what was going on,” Murray said.

Murray said that by the time she walked up toward the vigil, one of the males had a gun in his hand.

Another male ran into a nearby ditch and jumped back out of the ditch, stating he had been shot.

“After that there were several more people start just shooting, shooting, shooting,” Murray said. “Then I walked up to them and said, ‘I’ve called the sheriff. I dialed 911.’ That’s when they started jumping in their cars and going.”

She said one young male approached her with a 9mm, but her strong faith in God kept her from panicking.

“I said, ‘I called the sherrif,’” Murray said. “He just turned and went back.”

Officials with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department who responded to the scene declined to comment on the incident.

Attempts to reach other Dallas County Sheriff’s Department officials Friday were unsuccessful.

Barley, 19, was killed when the 2003 Toyota Camry in which she was a passenger struck a deer before leaving the roadway and striking several trees. Barley  was taken to Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, 18-year-old Janaysha Jones,  was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center and was treated for her injuries.

Another injured passenger, less than one-year-old , was transported to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.  The Sept. 19 accident occurred on Dallas County 29, five miles north of Orrville.
