Injuries piling up early for local football teams

It’s early in the year, but several local teams are already dealing with injuries to some of their key players.  Here’s an update on some of the injured players following last week’s games:

Jalen Furlow, QB, Ellwood Christian

Furlow suffered a concussion with around 11 minutes remaining in the Eagles’ 48-38 victory over Francis Marion Friday. The injury occurred on a play where Furlow landed on his head after flipping into the air.

“I don’t know if he flipped and hit his head on the ground or what,” Ellwood Christian head coach Eric Martinear said. “I really couldn’t see it from a distance because it was going to the opposite end zone from the scoreboard and it was on their side line.”

Martinear said Furlow was held out of the rest of the game as a precaution and will go through the normal concussion protocal, but he expects the quarterback to be ready for Ellwood’s next game against Akron Sept. 5.

“He will be fine for our next game,” Martinear said. “We have a bye week this week and we are all just going to get healthy. I think we all will be ready to go.”

Wesley Gunter, QB Meadowview Christian

Gunter suffered a knee injury in the Trojans’ jamboree game two weeks ago at New Life Christian Academy and will miss the rest of the season.

Meadowview Christian head coach Lebo Jones said the injury was a torn ACL and that Gunter had surgery Tuesday.

“Losing Wesley is a huge loss for us,” Jones said. “He was one of our five seniors and he has been playing for me for five years. He was just like another coach on the field. When I said something he knew what I was talking about right off the bat. He could finish my sentence for me, so it is a big loss not having him out there.”

Jones called Gunter the “leader of the team” and said the injury happened on a play where he threw an interception and attempted to tackle the opposing ball carrier.

Khamari Gibbs, QB, Southside

Southside head coach Daniel Flowers said quarterback Khamari Gibbs is expected to miss his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury he suffered a couple of weeks ago.

Gibbs sat out the Panthers’ opener against rival Selma last Friday and Flowers said he will  miss this Friday’s road game at Keith.

“The doctor said he will be ready for region play next week,” Flowers said.

If Gibbs does not play, Scott Cole will get his second start for at quarterback for the Panthers.
