John T. Morgan Academy’s search for a new headmaster continues.

The school started receiving applicants for the headmaster two weeks following its announcement of Martha McKnight’s termination, said David Henderson, the head of the school’s board of directors. He declined to comment about the traits the board would like the new headmaster to have but said they have some great candidates for the job.

“We’ve gotten several resumes,” Henderson said. “At this point, the board is just meeting and reviewing all the resumes, but it’s going well.”

Two weeks ago, the board selected Morgan Director of Instruction and teacher Karim Oaks for the interim headmaster position.

She also held the position in 2012, when Randy Skipper announced he was leaving the headmaster position to become the Alabama Independent School Association executive director.

The Morgan alumni previously worked as Morgan’s cheerleading coach and scholar bowl sponsor. She was also a Selma High School teacher.

Oaks graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1982.

Oaks said the strenuous, heavy workload that comes with her added responsibilities is possible thanks to her fellow employees.

“It’s a big job, but I’ve got a lot of good help,” Oaks said. “I couldn’t do it without my staff.”

Henderson said Oaks seemed to be a natural fit for the job.

“She is integrality involved with all of the decisions at the school,” Henderson said. “She and the headmaster worked very closely together in making sure that the schools ran smoothly.”

Henderson said the board hired an interim to eliminate the pressure of a hiring deadline.

“We have got a more than qualified individual serving in that interim position right now, so we feel that we have all the time we need to make the right decision,” Henderson said. “We’re in a good position.”

Henderson declined Wednesday to comment on what led to McKnight’s termination.
