William “Bill” Monroe Veach, Jr., 61, of Valley Grande, Alabama, passed away on June 9, 2014.

Bill was born and raised in Selma and loved beagles, Auburn football, and a medium rare steak. His 6’3” frame made him easy to spot around town, but his tender heart made him easy to love. He gave back with an open hand to his community, serving in numerous civic organizations and in recent years volunteering as a coach for the Dallas County High School girls’ softball team.

He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Veach Urquhart of Baltimore, Md., and Claire Veach of McKenzie, Tenn., as well as his partner of three decades, Anna (Prestel) Veach of Soldotna, Alaska; his son-in-law, Capt. Wes Urquhart, USMC, of Yuma, Ariz.; his mother, Doris (McKinney) Veach of Selma; his sister, Sue (Ric) Crane of Greensboro, Ga.; and his niece, Kelsey Crane of New York City, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at First Baptist Church in downtown Selma with Dr. Jerry Light officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Friends are welcome to visit with the family beginning at noon in the church sanctuary.

Honorary pallbearers are Noopie Cosby, Tommy “Pookie” Morris, Bubba Stough, Les Smith, Andy Rives, Jack Callen, Kenny Welch and Scott Casey.

Memorial donations may be made to the Selma Animal Shelter, 206 Medical Center Parkway, or to the Dallas County High School girls’ softball team, 335 Fifth Avenue, Plantersville, Alabama 36758.
