Farmers Market to open Saturday

Selma residents won’t have to travel far to find fresh, locally grown produce Saturday.

The Selma Farmers Market opens 6 a.m. Saturday for the first time in 2014. Produce will include squash, peaches, cucumbers, cabbage, green beans, okra and other vegetables and fruits, farmers market organizer Margaret Harrison said.

Harrison expects four to five different farmers to sell produce Saturday during the 2014 grand opening.

Kathi Needham, who previously helped organize the farmers market, said she and others look forward to the market each year. Occasionally, the market includes different kinds of cobblers, Needham said.

“People are always looking for something that’s homegrown, but also home cooking,” she said. “It’s picked the night before and it’s there the next morning. You can’t get fresher than that.”

Needham and Harrison said farmers often give away a free basket of produce, but they weren’t sure if one would be given away Saturday.

The farmers market will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until mid-November, Harrison said. The market is officially scheduled to last until 2 p.m. each day, but Harrison said producers often sell out early. The Selma Farmers Market is located in Bloch Park on Dallas Avenue.
