Bienville Park construction is complete, but it shouldn’t remain in current condition

Last week, construction finished on a collapsed storm drain beneath Bienville Park, but work still needs to be done.

Beneath a mound of light brown dirt, sits a freshly placed drain that leads out into the Alabama River. But on the surface, little remains of the parks previous persona, except for a rectangle of concrete that once supported a monument dedicated to French explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville.

The monument sits across the street, in front of the former Harmony Club and could easily be moved to its former location, but the bricks surrounding and grass that once characterized the park are gone.

On one hand, it’s nice to see construction finally complete, after a sinkhole opened on the edge of the park nearly five months ago.

But we also hope the city has further plans for the park beyond its current state.

The park sits in an excellent location — overlooking the Alabama River in Selma’s historic downtown.

If nothing else, the park is a nice place to watch the sunrise on a sunny day or enjoy lunch next to the Alabama River.

If the deadline to make downtown look nice is the 2015 Bridge Crossing Jubilee, then city officials have plenty of time to figure out a solution.

But if they city is concerned about the city looking nice for its residents then the deadline should be much sooner.

Regardless of the deadline, the city shouldn’t demolish a park and replace it with a mound of dirt.
