Cottage Hill at Southside

Following a 34-8 loss to rival Selma, the Southside Panthers (0-1) are hoping to bounce back with a win against Cottage Hill (0-1).

The Warriors lost to Jay (Fla.) 18-12 last week, despite a great throwing night from quarterback Cole Butler. Butler was 13 of 20 for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Southside defeated Cottage Hill 20-7.

Keith at Sunshine

It wasn’t until the second half that Keith (1-0) finally separated itself against Wilcox Central last week, but eventually the Bears pulled away for a 28-12 victory. This week Keith begins area play at Sunshine (1-0), who defeated John Essex last week 27-6.

Bears quarterback Maurice Crumpton led the way last week, scoring five total touchdowns.

Dallas County at Clay County

The Hornets dominated Calhoun in a 54-0 victory last week, giving Barry Colburn his first win as Hornets head coach. Dallas County has shown progress in a jamboree victory over Montevallo and a regular season win against the overmatched Tigers, but Friday night will be a great measuring stick.

Dallas County (1-0) travels to Clay County (1-0), who won Class 4A, Region 3 with a 7-0 record region record last season. The Volunteers have a history of advancing far into the playoffs in their time in 3A and their short time in 4A.

Selma at Jackson

Coming off a 34-8 victory over rival Southside, Selma (1-0) can move its focus to winning an area championship.  The Saints will get to see how much their team has improved after last season’s 4-6 record against Jackson (1-0), who won Class 5A, Region 3 in 2012.

In the Aggies opening 37-6 win against Clarke County, quarterback Matthew Jordan was the star. He was 18 of 24 passing for 183 yards and two touchdowns.

Ellwood Christian at Holy Spirit

The Eagles made the playoffs in their first season in AHSAA, but had turnover problems in a 30-12 loss to Francis Marion in their season opener. The Rams capitalized on seven fumbles by Ellwood Christian.

This week Ellwood Christian (0-1) takes on Holy Spirit (1-0) in a Class 1A, Region 3 matchup. The Titans matched their 2012 win total with a 13-0 victory over Waterloo last week.
