Clanton golfer holds one-shot lead in girls championship

The 52nd Annual Bud Burns Dixie Junior Championship got rolling Monday with the girls taking to the course on day one.

At the end of the first round, a golfer from Clanton found herself atop the leaderboard, holding to a slim one-shot lead.

Madison Sanders, finished day one with a 5-over round of 77 at the Selma Country Club. And, by carding a birdie on No. 18, Sanders, was able to secure the first-day lead of one shot over Gadsden’s Hope Gadsden.

The remains a pair of golfers at 7-over, two shots back and another pair at 8-over, who are within shooting distance of the lead as they head into Tuesday’s second round.

The 2012 girls champion, Heather Gillenwatres appears to be too far back to defend her title, after shooting an opening round of 15-over.

Last year, Gillenwaters secured the title with rounds of 79 and 82.

The lone Selma golfer in the girls championship, Jillian Stewart, also shot a 15-over round of 87.

The second round of the girls championship will begin at 8 a.m., with the leaders teeing off at 9:12 a.m.

The boys championship kick off Tuesday, with tee times beginning at 9:40 a.m. The boys championship will conclude Wednesday.
