A recent press release concerning summer safety from the Alabama State Law Enforcement Task Force reminds citizens that officers will be working to create a visible enforcement presence to insure public safety throughout Memorial Day weekend.

“[Task force officers] are intent on preventing crimes and violations that lead to death and injuries,” the press release said. “All available personnel will combine forces with county and municipal agencies in Alabama to conduct various details designed to enhance public safety and to enforce all laws, including traffic, boating and alcoholic beverage laws.”

The task force’s May safety initiative will run from Friday, May 17 through Tuesday, June 4 with the hope of decreasing the number of fatal accidents that occur during Memorial Day festivities.  Alabama State Troopers investigated three fatal vehicle crashes during last year’s Memorial Day weekend, down from seven fatal crashes in 2011.

The task force said it urges everyone to safely enjoy summer by buckling up on the road and in the water, not driving or boating while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, avoiding texting or other distracting activities while operating vehicles, and being cautious while crossing highways and railroad tracks.
