Harlem Wizards to play at Martin Middle

In an effort to make some “magic” happen at Brantley Elementary, the PTO is hosting the Harlem Wizards at Martin Middle School Tuesday, Feb. 19. All proceeds from the basketball performance will go towards the school’s playground, which is currently in bad condition.

Paula Goodman, PTO member, said the playground equipment is in such bad condition that children can’t play on it.

“It’s gotten really bad over the past few years,” Goodman said. “It’s extremely unsafe because the equipment is so old, it’s been there for at least 20 years.”

Goodman said she hopes that by hosting the Harlem Wizards, the school can raise enough money to purchase new equipment.

The Harlem Wizards are a comedy-based basketball team that incorporates comedic skits into their performance. Goodman said the show will entertain the whole family with clean, family comedy.

“They’re a lot like the Harlem Globetrotters. We’re hoping to raise a lot of money from this,” Goodman said. “Our goal is to have $50,000 to put towards the new playground after this fundraiser.”

This is one of many fundraisers Brantley has hosted to raise money for a new playground. Goodman said earlier in the year the school held a fall carnival and movie day with all proceeds going towards new equipment.

“This will be our largest fundraiser yet,” she said. “We really want to get good, safe equipment that kindergarten through sixth grade can enjoy.”

Tickets for the performance cost $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Brantley Elementary.

“We want people to support the children at Brantley Elementary and for them to have a safe environment where they can play,” Goodman said. “The playground is deplorable right now, and no one wants their child to -play in an unsafe environment.” For more information on the fundraiser, call Paula Goodman at 349- 6489.
