Oscar visits WaltonPublished 8:50pm Thursday, February 7, 2013
Roll out the red carpet and grab your popcorn, the Academy Awards are coming to Selma — or at least the best picture nominees are.
For the past few weeks, The Selma Walton Theater has been showing all of the 2013 best picture nominees including Lincoln, Argo, Les Misérables and beginning Friday, Silver Linings Playbook.
Sharon Diggs-Jackson, manager of the Walton, said many residents have been coming out to view these box office hits.
“We love that Selmians have the opportunity to see these pictures and actors at work,” Jackson said. “Our mission is to show all the nominees before the Academy Awards.”
Nominees for the awards, which will be held Sunday, Feb. 24, include “Amour,” “Argo,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Django Unchained,” “Les Misérables,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”
“Silver Linings Playbook,” starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, will show Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jackson said although she hasn’t seen this film yet, which is based on a true story, she expects that it will be a hit.
“I think a lot of people will be able to relate to this movie,” Jackson said. “It’s all about struggles and how you pull through them.”
Next week, beginning Friday, Feb. 15, the Walton will show “Django Unchained,” a Quentin Tarantino film.
“I’ve seen Django and I think a lot of people will come out to see it,” Jackson said. “It’s very action-packed.”
The month of Academy Award best picture nominees will conclude with “Zero Dark Thirty,” which chronicles the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist Osama bin Laden.
“It’s going to be a tough decision for who receives best picture,” Jackson said of the awards show. “There are such a wide variety of films. There’s a historical timepiece, there’s kind of a love story, there’s action and then “Les Misérables” is a musical.”
With all these popular movies coming to Selma, Jackson said she hopes for large crowds at the movies.
“That’s what I want, for Selma to be able to provide quality movies right here,” she said.
