A home on the corner of Eugene Avenue and Legrande Street was destroyed in a fire late Friday evening. Witnesses said flames from the blaze reached well above neighboring trees before units from the Selma Fire Department reached the scene.

When the department arrived on the scene they found that no one was inside the house and that the home was in fact abandoned. The fire was reported after 9 p.m.

“All my memories are in that house,” said Beverly Jackson, whose mother just moved from the house a few months ago when she went on dialysis and soon after passed away. “This was my childhood home. I grew up there.”

Jackson said she saw the flames from a few blocks away and when she got to Eugene Avenue and saw her former home was on fire, both her heart and stomach sunk.

“They called me last week to tell me that people were vandalizing the house,” Jackson said. “Some of our pictures and stuff were still in there but people have been stealing stuff out of there [recently].”
