Southside, Dallas Co., Keith highlight county Christmas tourney

Starting Friday, Dallas County will see some of the area’s top local teams face off in a tournament that will also include some of the state of Alabama’s top-ranked teams.

The Dallas County Christmas Tournament will start on Friday at 4 p.m. at Wallace Community College-Selma, with the tournament concluding on Saturday with games starting at 4 p.m.

Cedric Brown, head boys basketball coach of Southside High School, said the tournament will is a great chance to showcase local talent.

“We’re making a big deal out of it because all of the teams in the tournament are good within their classification,” Brown said. “We just want to display that talent to the community.”

The tournament will include the girls and boys basketball teams for Southside, Keith, Dallas County, and Wilcox-Central high schools.

Along with having some of the top teams in the area, the tournament has the added bonus of having some of the topped ranked team’s in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

As of last week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings, the boys teams of Dallas County, Southside and Keith were each ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, Class 3A, and Class 1A respectively.

Wilcox Central’s boys were also ranked No. 1 in Class 4A in last week’s ASWA rankings.

“It’s really just going to be a good tournament between local teams that are ranked in order to display the talent within the county,” Brown said. “It’s sort of about bragging rights, but it’s also for the school system and the city to let the county know that the teams are making strides.”

On Friday, Wilcox Central’s girls will play against Dallas County’s girls and Wilcox Central’s boys will play Dallas County’s boys.

Southside’s girls will play Keith girls, and day one will conclude with Southside’s boys against Keith’s boys.
