In helping lead her team to victory over the Selma Lady Saints on Friday, Keith freshman guard Harriet Winchester is the female athlete of the week.

Winchester led the Lady Bears with 14 points in Friday’s 40-33 season-opening home win.

Cecil Williams, head girls basketball coach of Keith High School, said after the game that Winchester is a good player who contributes a lot to the Lady Bears’ success.

“She’s a great player. She played at a fast pace instead of slowing her self down a bit,” Williams said. “She hit some big shots. She started cramping toward the end, we called a couple timeouts to get her stretched and she came back in and helped us out.”

Despite being a freshman, Winchester’s debut was not Friday night.

Winchester was also one of the Lady Bears’ key players and leading scorers during last season’s area championship and Class 1A Central regional run, as she took the floor as an eight grader.
