Fun things to do this fall in the Black Belt

As the days of shorts, t-shirts, sun tan lotion and driving with the window down come to a close; the festive months of the holiday season roll in.

Selma hasn’t missed a beat in making sure that there are plenty of fun cold-month activities to participate in.

In the past few weeks alone I’ve had the opportunity to go on a ghost tour, listen to an authentic bluegrass band and hand out candy to more than 400 children dressed as ghosts and goblins.

Thursday night I was fortunate enough to attend the Wild Game Cook-Off, sponsored by the Alabama Wildlife Federation. As a “strictly chicken” kind of girl, I stepped out of my comfort zone and filled my plate with duck gumbo, rabbit stew, deer meat and a few other cuisines I’ve never tasted before. As I talked to chefs and hunters who have worked hard to perfect their secret recipes, I realized how fortunate I am to live in a city that offers events like this one.

Although we may live in a small town, we certainly have many events to fill up our calendars and keep us busy.

Kenan’s Mill Festival, which will be held tomorrow, is another event Black Belt residents can look forward to. The day-long festival will feature music, hayrides, mill tours and many other attractions that are sure to keep the family entertained. Also, an array of tasty “fall food” will be available, like hot chili and warm apple cider.

Residents will also have the opportunity to tour planes and spend some time getting to know area pilots during Aviation Day at Craig Field on Nov. 10. This also happens to be the same day as the annual Antique Truck Show.

And the best part is, all these fun, fall events are activities the whole family can enjoy together. This means there is no reason to stay in and watch television because “it’s too cold outside” this fall and winter. The city of Selma simply won’t stand for that because there are too many fun and festive fall activities to partake in.

And of course, if you’re feeling tired from all the outdoor events Selma has to offer, you can always grab a friend and catch the latest movie showing at the Selma Walton Theater, which is conveniently located next to Sweet Advantages where you can grab a hotdog and a scoop of your favorite flavor of ice cream.

So as we begin to swap out our flip flops for fall coats, remember to check out what’s going on locally and remember to have a fun and safe holiday season.
