Trunk-O-Treat event planned by VFD

For many rural areas in Dallas County it can be difficult sometimes to go to door to door on Oct. 31 and get a sack full of candy. To solve this problem, the Burnsvillle Volunteer Fire Department has created “Trunk-O-Treat,” to be held on Halloween.

“When you have a country community like this, your neighbors aren’t [geographically] as close as they are in the city,” said Cynthia Pilgrim, board president of the Burnsville Volunteer Fire Department. “So for little kids who really enjoy trick-or-treating out here, they would have to walk several miles just to trick or treat, so this way we’ll have it all together in one little spot.”

Children can begin showing up at 6:30 p.m. at the fire station, Pilgrim said, which is located at 8605 Alabama Hwy. 14 East. Volunteer firefighters and locals will open their truck beds in the parking lot and pass out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Pilgrim added there’s a possibility another “special event” will be held in conjunction with trick-or-treating.

“We’re trying to put together a little haunted hayride too for the kids,” Pilgrim said.

Fire trucks will also be on display for children to tour, she added. This is the fourth year the event has been held and Pilgrim said, it keeps getting better.

“It’s just a better and safer alternative to trick-or-treating,” Pilgrim said. “My favorite part is just seeing the kids come out and enjoy themselves, and I encourage all children to come and participate in this. It’ll be a good time.”

She added that if anyone wants to help set up the event and hand out candy, they can contact her at 773-5757.

“We need to know so we can plan out how much area we need for parking,” she said. “It’ll be a great night, and we need all the help we can get.”
