With big plays on offense and defense on the way to Dallas County’s 26-6 homecoming win over Francis Marion on Friday, Demarius Berry is the male athlete of the week.

Berry racked up 206 yards rushing on 24 carries and a touchdown, but also had three fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown on the defensive side of the football.

Berry, a senior, said his role is to do whatever his team calls on him to do whether its on offense or defense.

“I have a big role for the team playing both ways, so we can come out with the win,” Berry said. “I want to give it my best.”

Even as he was called on to carry the ball on the final drive of the game, noticeably exhausted, Berry still capped off a 60-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run.

He said he has his teammates and his will to thank for his ability to keep pushing on.

“I was tired, but my teammates kept telling me to go, keep going until the game was over,” Berry said, “so I kept pushing and kept going until the game was over.”

Berry added that giving one’s all for the team is important to all of the Hornets players and coaches.

It’s that spirit and mentality that Berry said the Hornets will take into Friday’s game at No. 2 Dadeville.

“It means a lot to me, my coaches, my team and everybody,” Berry said. “It means a lot. We’re trying to fight for the playoffs this year and we’re just going to go out tomorrow and give it our best.”
