City-wide cleanup set for Saturday

For the third consecutive year, the city of Selma is promoting the cleaning of closets and the sweeping of floors Saturday in an effort to promote an organized, city-wide cleanup.

Selma Mayor George Evans said those who wish to have their trash picked up during the cleanup, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 30, should put their trash on the streets so city officials can focus their attention on the litter and trash in the city.

“We’ve got company coming for the Fourth of July, so we want to have a clean city,” Evans said. “We want to make sure our city is clean whenever company comes to town. It’s no different than when you clean your home up when you have guests coming.”

Selma City councilman Greg Bjelke said he encouraged all residents to participate in the day-long trash pickup, and community members to bag, box or neatly stack their trash curbside.

“It’s right before the Fourth of July, so we want the city to look good,” Bjelke said. “We always want the city to look good though. People can come to Selma on any given day and decide that they want to open up their business here, and we have a lot of tourists come in as well, so we just want to work together and encourage everyone to keep the city clean. We always encourage homeowners, churches and businesses to look beyond their own properties, too.”

Bjelke said the cleanup is no small task, and urged residents to put their trash curbside beginning Friday because the trucks collecting the trash will run through wards at different times.

“It takes everybody working together to make this successful,” Bjelke said. “The city cannot do anything.”

Although the event will encourage residents to cleanup litter both on their properties and elsewhere, Bjelke said he hoped everyone would be motivated to continue to keep the streets clean even when city-wide events are not being hosted.

“We encourage neighborhoods, businesses and individuals to organize their own walking cleanups as well,” Bjelke said. “It is important to keep our city clean.”

Although most trash will be accepted for pickup on Saturday, no tires, furniture and appliances will be collected.
