Red light cameras are changing mentality

We all know where they are. We all know someone who has been caught on film at least once — and likely more than once — breaking a traffic law.

Last June, crews began installing the first of three traffic light cameras within Selma’s city limits.

Since that time, we have had a 30-day grace period for drivers — a period that saw hundreds, upon hundreds of warnings issued — and months of actual tickets that began with a huge number of citations and then has leveled off.

But what has changed, and what was the intention of city leaders, is the driving habits of drivers in the areas around these cameras.

You can watch as drivers are careful to stay behind the white line at these red lights. You can see more drivers coming to a complete stop before turning right and — more important — you have seen the creation of safer driving zones.

In short, the traffic light cameras — despite ruffling a lot of feathers, and lightening some wallets in the process — have done their jobs.
