The Selma 9 and 10-year-old All-Star team’s two games on Saturday had two very different outcomes. In the morning game, the team came out on fire and defeated Monroe 7-4 to advance. However, in the afternoon match Selma encountered a power-hitting Thomasville team that rolled up 16 runs to take the win. Selma’s 9 and 10-year-old All-Stars had two different sessions in their District 4 Dixie Youth tournament and with it, two very different results.

The squad won their first game with Monroe 7-4 at 10 a.m., but fell hard in their afternoon game against Thomasville 16-1.

The Selma side fell behind in game one 4-0 quickly to Monroe, but were able to peck away slowly throughout the game.

“Those boys played so hard,” coach Miliam Turner said. “They never gave up. You have six innings to play and we played all of them. The kids are really doing what it takes to win and Ricky Waters and Alan Harris are the ones that do a great job keeping them in focus.”

Selma began their comeback in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs from Brayton Brown and Zyon Smith.

They got one run back in the third from Rondarius Sanders and one back in the fourth with another run from Brown to pull even.

In the fifth inning, the All-Stars used aggressive base running to get three very important runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win.

“I’m proud of what they did during this game,” Turner said.

The second game was not as pleasant for the Selma All-Stars.

The boys got behind early and could never recover from the hard-hitting Thomasville team.

“We got our tails kicked this afternoon,” Turner said. “You have to take your hat off to the other team (Thomasville). They played as well and just hit the ball hard.”

Sanders scored the only run for the Selma side that must now shake off the loss.

“It’s a double elimination tournament” Turner said. “You live to fight another day, and we will. We will do our best Wednesday and try to bounce back. That’s what we told the kids in there.”

The All-Stars will continue their play on Wednesday at the SportsPlex.
