Tomatoes are a popular plant

Hello gardeners.

We are coming up on the summer vegetable growing season.

I think everyone grows tomatoes whether they are grown as single plants in containers or large gardens Tomatoes are classified by their uses. Canning tomatoes are pear shaped, thick skinned and are called Italian or paste tomato.

The Roma is an example of a canning tomato. Slicing tomatoes are good for sandwiches often called beefsteak.

The small fruited cherry tomatoes are used in salads or good as a snack. Sweet 100 is an example of a salad tomato.

There are two types of tomatoes, determinate and indeterminate. This is often confusing, so we’ll go through both types and figure out which type is best for your planting needs.

The vines of determinate or bush tomatoes set fruit once and then stop, making them good for canning.  Examples of these are Roma, Celebrity and Tiny Tim.

Indeterminate vines are sprawling and grow 6 feet or more. They keep producing all season.Examples of these are Better Boy, Atkinson, Brandywine(heirloom), Park’s Whopper and Sweet 100.

Heirloom tomatoes have become very popular in the last few years. These have been around a long time and are disease resistant and very flavorful. Just writing this makes me hungry  for a tomato sandwich or tomato pie.

Why not try a tomato of each kind?
