Group protests at STJ for second day

Published 10:46pm Thursday, July 29, 2010

SELMA – A group of about 30 people protested Thursday about an hour in front

of The Selma Times-Journal offices on Water Avenue.  It was the second day

they protested.

Among the protestors were participants from the Freedom Foundation and

former city councilman Johnny Leashore.  The protest was organized by Faya

Rose Toure, who said it was in response to the newspaper not reporting her

activities at a council meeting earlier in the week and at prior council

meetings.  She is a Selma attorney and is married to State Sen. Henry (Hank)

Sanders.

During her address to the council earlier in the week, Toure made claims

that council president Cecil Williamson was a member of a “hate group” and

showed pictures she said were of Williamson attending a rally of the group.

“I have been before the (city) council four times to talk about the

president who belongs to a hate group,” she said, “and not one time did you

report it. You are biased in your reporting on racial issues in this city.”

During the protest Thursday, Toure and a Freedom Foundation representative

met with Dennis Palmer, Times-Journal publisher, and Leesha Faulkner,

editor, and talked about her concerns with the newspaper and her reason for

calling for the protest. Toure furnished copies of photographs she had

passed around at the Selma City Council meeting Tuesday night to Faulkner.

After the meeting, Palmer said, “We met with Mrs. Toure and appreciated the

opportunity to discuss her concerns.  We feel we established good

communication on the matter, hope and expect that will serve us each well

going forward, something Mrs. Toure acknowledged was important to her and to

us.  As we go forward, we will have a factual, well-balanced news story on

Mrs. Toure’s assertions about Mr. Williamson, and his position on same.”

She knows that every time she does thos stuff that everyone will talk. She is a sociopath that will never let things change. But psssst when yall say her people that is kinda sorta , just a lil bit racist.

  • tnmurdock

Would someone get her a dog, cat,or doll something she can carry around to talk to so she will stop making a fool of herself… but as they say there is no bad press… sad sad woman… and fleecing foundation, I know quite a few “cheap pair of curtains” and they were offended by your comment. Expect legal action from the CPOC swiftly. And there could be a follow up suite from the sashes, they have had to put up with the moaning and groaning form the cheap pair of curtains so they want some cash too… just thought I would warn you.

  • fleecing foundation

The name “Toure” is completely fitting for her. Her mind is totally enslaved, just as the people that follow her lead. She has really found some running partners lately that will give her a run for the money on the “race pimping” category. I don’t know which one is worse.

  • bama

Is Rose a member of the cult from Colorado or is she just using them because the people of Selma have turned their back on her antics?

Does she not believe Jesus is God? I find her statements about “honkeys” and “those white people” to be extremely racist and bigoted.

    • L N

      they are using each other.

      • L N

suddenly the STJ has reversed my initials. Weird.
        N L

And I will post this here also: This is from an STJ article from June 2002 regarding Rose’s defense for choosing the name Toure. She finds all the attention regarding the horrible things the man did in his past ridiculous and racist, because he also was thought to be a hero. Hmm? Does that sound familiar?

“According to the brief, Toure told the Montgomery Advertiser that her last name was from the late Sekou Toure, the longtime leader of the West African nation of Guinea.

The brief further states that “while Sanders said the change was designed to remove slave owner names from her past, Sekou Toure is generally viewed as having spent most of his 26 years in power enslaving his own people.”

The Times-Journal, after examining several sites on the Internet, found that Toure, who died in 1984 while in power, had committed human rights abuses.

According to one site published by the University of Minnesota Human Rights Library, Toure’s “regime purged or forced into exile members of other ethnic groups, while others were killed, tortured, disappeared or imprisoned under the Preventive Detention Laws.”

Faya Toure, when asked to respond to the brief, said that the brief was

not only racist in its connotations, but she also criticized the media for wasting its time on something so unimportant.

“Why should my name change make this much of a difference?” she asked. “Don’t they have anything else to report on.”

Toure added that she had not read any documentation describing human rights abuses in New Guinea.

However, she said even if there were abuses, these abuses were no different from the abuses that George Washington, the first President of the United States, committed against his own people when becoming president, after America officially gained its independence from Britain.

“Should everyone who uses the name Washington in America be accused of enslaving their own people,” Toure said. “It is absolutely ridiculous.”

Toure became the leader of Guinea in 1958, and is often cited as the person who liberated Guinea from its rule under France, which was ruled by Charles De Gaulle at the time.

Faya Toure said she considers Sekou Toure a hero, who liberated Guinea from the exploitation of France, which had ruled Guinea for a over hundred years.

“If I changed my name to Rose De Gaulle, no one would have said anything,” Toure said. “It just shows how racist these people are.”

So let’s see…she chose to respect the man for the positive aspects despite the fact he had cruel associations. So do tell…how exactly is she having the audacity to go after Cecil Williamson who is doing the exact same thing regarding Bedford. The man may have been associated with the KKK (later renouncing them when they became violent/evil) but was responsible for saving Selma during the Civil War. Let me break it down for you: Toure = evil tyrant who enslaved his OWN people, yet did liberate the country vs. Nathaniel Bedford= accused of association with evil KKK, yet played a heroic part in Selma during the Civil War.

She is a hypocrite people! Wake up. Mr. Williamson is being lamblasted for doing nothing different than she does. Oh wait..one difference…he’s white. Black Panthers are perfectly acceptable (known hate group..you know…like she calls the League of the South) but not Confederate Flags. Double Standard.

    so.

  • L N

btw, Nina, I’ve seen those pictures. They are distasteful and mean. You need to think a little more deeply about your attitudes.

    • Nina

Now that I’ve seen the pictures, I will agree that they are crude and I wouldn’t have displayed them. Not cute at all.

  • Bama123456

Rose has to be the center of attention!! Its all about Rose Rose Rose!!! She cares about no one but herself. She needs to leave Selma and never come back!!! I would just pity the poor town that ended up with her!!!

  • Nina

I was made for a different world, Pops

    :)

    Nina

  • POPDUKES12

The watermelon picture would be hurtful and had no positive meaning for it’s location. Having seen that Cecil should have left immediately as that has always been symbol of negative stereotyping and very derogatory. I guess if it had been a swastika, it would have been perceived as an American Indian symbol. 80% of the people that Cecil represent would be offended by this picture. Nina is wanting to see things as they should be, and NL is seeing things as the world we live in has twisted them. Gotta go with NL on this one. popdukes12

    • Nina

      A few more things, Pops,

      Have You seen the pictures?
What if it was with pictures of white kids eating watermelon?
      Are You sure it wasn’t?

      Should Mr Williamson resign?

Also, a swastika is a far cry from a black child eating watermelon.

      Nina

  • Nina

    NL,

You said the picture was ‘mean, patronizing and sick.’

What if, when I look at it, I see a cute kid enjoying the bounty of God’s Earth?

You said, “There are wonderful things about the South and that is not one of them! Disgusting!”

    Why does that disgust You?

What if there were also pictures of white kids eating watermelon at the party?

    Do You KNOW there weren’t?

It seems to me that Mr Williamson has been tried and convicted in the hearts of some. Is that fair?

And back to my original questions:
(This is for Southernstlye061, I know You’re still listening)

Can You show me where in the Selma City Bylaws that this is cause to kick Mr Williamson out as president?
Should he be knocked back to Ward 1 rep?
Is there a law to back this action?

    Nina

    • L N

OH COME ON,,,you know as well as I do that that image has NOTHING to do with a “cute kid enjoying the bounty of God’s Earth”
That has to be the silliest and shallowist statement I’ve heard yet!
It is and always has MEANT to ridicule black people

      • Nina

        NL,

        Have You seen the pictures?
And You didn’t answer my questions.

        Nina

  • Ray39766

Once a scum bag, always a scum bag. Go away Rose, no one loves you or wants you. I would almost feel sorry for poor little Hank, but lets face it, he made the mistake of marrying an idiot.

  • saban13

Rose sanders has been a cancer to this community for years.

  • fleecing foundation

If black kids eating watermelon is racist…then Selma is full of racist. I see them not only selling Watermelon on the side of the road day after day, but eating them as well. I would really prefer to see the picture of a black kid with a diploma or a job around here.

    • bama

I eat watermelon all the time. It is tasty.

  • Southernstyle061

Nina,I feel sorry for you . I won’t respond any farther to your ignorance . It quite obvious you are not interested in what’s right .

  • Nina

    Southernstyle061,

“Outraged” that Mr Williamson went to a Southern Heritage party and there was a picture of an African American child eating watermelon there?

    I haven’t seen it but it sounds like a cute picture to me;
I’ll save my outrage for something that really matters.

Why are You outraged by the picture?

Can You show me where in the Selma City Bylaws that this is cause to kick Mr Williamson out as president?
Should he be knocked back to Ward 1 rep?
Is there a law to back this action?

    Nina

    • L N

Nina…if you find such a picture “cute” then I think you need to examine your own attitudes a little more deeply. Such an image is anything but “cute.”
I am not crazy about Rose’s attitudes and behaviour, but promoting those kind of mean, patronizing and sick images of ANY culture or group is more than distasteful.
While it does bother me that Mr Williamson would lend his presence to a racist group, do we know for a fact that that was what was going on? I confess that, not being familiar with the group that was hosting this event, I really can’t draw any conclusions.
What matters is what he does as a councilman.
And what matters also is Mrs Sanders’ manner of dealing with issues, real or fabricated by her. Her behaviour reeks of personal publicity-stunts more than anything else. There are better ways to handle these things.
AS for the FF, they have tried repeatedly to smear the STJ because they don’t paint Mr Duke and his Dukelings in the glowing terms they’d like to see themselves. It is odd that they are suddenly getting into bed with Rose after calling her “the devil” over and over and talking about how evil she is. Now they’re big buds?
In closing, I hate to think that “Southern Heritage” is represented by images such as the “watermelon kid.” There are a lot of wonderful things about the South and that is NOT one of them! Disgusting!

  • Southernstyle061

Having a picture with a black child dark as coal with big lips and eating a watermelon is not celebrating his history .That is what was in Mr.Williamson presence when he was celebrating his so called history on July 10,2010 . I didn’t see any of you address that fact . That can’t be explained away .It’s racist to the core . Mr. Williamson can keep his racist views and join whatever white supremacist group he wants However, he
shouldn’t be allowed to sit on the city council as president . It’s really sad that you all aren’t outraged . For you all not to question his actions proves Selma still has a long way to go regarding race relations .

  • fleecing foundation

The ONLY reason she is disrupting this meeting is so she can put ALL the blame on Cecil Williamson when she finally gets arrested. The very first night Rev. Williamson sat as the President of the council, she was there disrupting. It’s so transparent and pathetic this woman is such a race hustler.

  • HOPEFUL

IT IS SO SAD. SHAME ON YOU ROSE SHAME ON YOU.OH! I FORGOT YOU HAVE NONE.

  • RBTB

It looks to me like she is the racist one.

  • Nina

“Arrest me. Arrest me and the Sherrod’s will be down here exposing him…”

    Is that what she said???

  • fleecing foundation

She looks like a cheap pair of curtains.

    • dazed

The sista needs to get her hair done a mani/pedi and a stylist then get back to us.

  • areyouserious

Did she call Dr. Williamson a “honkey”? She is such a loser and should have been arrested for assault on an officer. If I hAd been there dropping N-bombs she would have tried to have me executed. But I’m Better person for not using racism to get my point across

  • NovaCaine

That outfit deeply offends me! A video seen around the world, and she’s dressed like there was a run on fabric at the Dollar Tree!

  • tonewah

I KNEW I should’ve gone to the City Council meeting Tuesday! I always miss the good stuff.

The Mayor and police showed a great deal of restraint. Seriously, if that had been you, me, or any other normal, non-annointed-one shoving a Chief of Police, we might’ve been on the ground with 3 knees in our backs, 2 sets of handcuffs around our wrists and maybe even a tazer probe or two hanging out of our skin, not that that’s the proper response, but we certainly wouldn’t have been gently coaxed from the room.

  • dazed

Who was the rep from the Freedom Foundation?

  • fleecing foundation

If the Rev. Cecil Williamson were to turn in his notice and be done with this council tomorrow, what would these goons have to talk about then? Selma would still have the massive amount of black on black crime, murders, shootings, unemployment, lack of jobs and industry, power struggles over control, in-fighting, crumbling school system, incompetent school board and government dependence. It’s amazing how this group can find trivial things to whine about to take everyone’s eyes off the real problems.

    • jon

      YES….

  • bama

LOL. She has to be one of the most ignorant people I’ve ever seen. Is this woman mentally ill or on medication of some sort?

  • L N

I don’t understand why she and her cronies weren’t arrested when they staged that thing in the schools a few years ago.

  • MadDog79

If Cecil Williamson going to a party of a Confederate General is a hate crime, then so is the Million Man March. What is the difference? They are both acts of celebrating the past right? Rose, I certainly wish you would get out of this town. Your own people can’t even stand you!!!

  • libby

Why in the HELL didn’t they arrest her? If that’s not disorderly conduct what is? She needs to be run out of town!

  • Nina

Did I hear Rose in the video calling for a ‘man of God” to stand up against Cecil?

    Mark Duke…where are You?

Mr Duke has enough influence to convince 30 people to move to Selma for his cause.

Mr Duke has enough money to pay for hundreds of people to come to Selma in the heat of August to protest for his cause.

Mr Duke hasn’t enough intestinal fortitude to come to ONE Selma City Council meeting to stand with Rose.

Instead he coerces her to ‘throw some chairs around.’

    Sad Sad Sad

  • bama

So Rose is now saying a history club is a “hate society”? I guess she really is scrapping the bottom of the barrell.

  • squirk

This is insanity, but then again it involves Rose so I apologize for the redundancy. Who cares if Williamson went to a function honoring Forrest. Has he not a right to go where he wishes or honor his history?

What has Williamson done anyway? Has he imposed his personal feelings into city business? Has he somehow injured Rose or the city? Is a city council meeting the appropriate forum to attack a person for what he does on his own time? Funny how truth is only Rose’s truth and justice is only her loudmouth opinion.

The true problems in Selma are the rabblerousers and pathetic stooges that have nothing better to do than run their mouths and gather in public to make fools of themselves. The reason Selma is in the shape it is has much more to do with Rose and her vitriolic rhetoric and conduct than whether Cecil Jackson chooses to attend a ceremony honoring a long dead Confederate General no matter what he did. That this woman is granted publicity for her ravings is just wrong. If Rose were to go and hear Farrakhan or “Rev.” Wright speak, that would be ballyhooed as honoring diverse thinking.

I have a great idea. Why prolong the agony? Let’s just make Rose the Mayor and let her appoint all her cronies into positions of leadership. Within 12 months both the white flight and legitimate business concerns would have relocated, the tax base will have evaporated, and Selma would be overrun by both the criminal element and those who value entitlements and something for nothing. Then only those remain and support her views and enjoy wallowing in her tiresome rampages can preside over their own form of Walpurgis Night as Selma dies and is reborn as the Dallas County version of Uniontown.

So sad to see people trying to drag a beautiful city drug into the septic tank like this..

  • sharon

May be it wasn’t printed because no-one wanted to read about it. Ask the Selma Times how many people called requesting that the story be printed. I’ll bet it is a low number if any.

  • hugh jorgen

Grow up Rose, this isn’t the 1950′s or 1960′s.

  • fleecing foundation

It’s amazing that a person of her character has the audacity to call someone else “racist”. For all the vile-racial discrimination coming from her mouth, this is just another reason Rose thinks she’s above the law, seperate but equal and gets to live by Double Standards.

  • libby

One good reason their actions are not reported is because NOBODY cares! Rose is always stirring up trouble and getting as much attention as she can while doing it. Selma would be a better place without her and without her followers! I completely agree with NL, If her time and worthless effort for attention was put into something else such as stopping her so loved “hate crimes” in Selma, something good might actually arise from her actions.

  • whateverUsay

Here’s a thought, why dont you picket and march over in the GWC? Thats how you should be using your energy, to try to curb violence in Selma

  • whateverUsay

Wow, who cares? Do you do everything for press? Hope not

MS Toure/Sanders and the Freedom Foundation want the STJ to print everything they do? And only present their points of view? These people want to use our local paper as nothing more than a way to funnel publicity their way and present only their own VERY BIASED actions and statements.
The paper is NOT your private PR firm, Rose and Mark. If you want something that praises and shores up your agendas, get your own printing presses and have at it! In the meantime, I have nothing but good words for Palmer, Faulkner and the rest of the staff at the STJ for maintaining good judgement and objectivity in their reporting.
Dear STJ’ers, don’t let the turkeys get you down.
And as for Mark and Rose..odd that they are suddenly bosom buddies again. This city would be so much better off if both of those people went somewhere else.

    • Nina

      N L,

This coming Friday, someone will be dancing with the devil in the broad day light.

      Question is:

Which one of them is the devil?

Kudos to the STJ from me as well.

  • chewbacca

Puhleese! Rose’ antics are anything but news! Why report it?

    • Knoxgirl

Seriously, Rose Sanders has the audacity to call another person a ” RACIST”. Rose, how about doing something worth while for the citizens of Selma, like closing your mouth. Rose, brings nothing to the table but trouble for Selma..
