Mary Katherine Michael Echols Evans, born in Elkhart, Indiana, on November 24, 1924, died in Houston, Texas, on March 1, 2009. Mary, or Mike as she was known to those closest to her, was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Samuel E. Evans, Sr., her father, William L. Echols, and her brother, Bill. She is survived by her stepmother, Edythe Echols Buchwald, and her five children, Samuel E. Evans, Jr., Susan E. Hohn, Michael N. Evans, Melanie E. Breed and Rebecca E. Churchwell. After her husband’s death in 1980, Mike relocated from Selma, Alabama, to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she built an 18-year career as an oil trader with Texaco Trading and Transportation Inc. She retired from that position in 1998 and moved to Houston, Texas. Mike was a gifted musician, a computer whiz, a creative chef and a talented needlecraft artist. Despite a lengthy battle against Parkinson’s disease, Mike never lost her sense of humor and wit nor her love and faith in God. We will miss you greatly.
