Former Orrville Pastor- Fr.

Robert Sheehey Dies

Reverend Robert J. Sheehey, S.S.E., former pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Orrville, died Tuesday evening at the Edmundite Missions House after a lingering illness.

He was 86 years old and had been an Edmundite priest for 56 years.

Robert John Sheehey first saw the light of day on March 13, 1917 in Hardwick, VT, when he was born to John William and Vera Fidelia Sheehey.

Young Sheehey studied pre-med at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, VT, where he graduated cum laude in 1939.

After spending a year at the University of Vermont Medical School, however, he decided he was called to treat souls rather than bodies.

After being ordained a priest on April 12, 1947, “Father Bob” devoted the next 23 years to the classroom.

In 1950 he was awarded a L.C.D. in Canon Law by the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. During a 20-year career as a teacher Sheehey taught at Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk, NY, at St.

Mary’s Seminary in Randolph, VT, at St. Edmund’s Seminary in Burlington, VT, and at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester.

In 1970 Father took on his first pastoral assignment, as assistant pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Mobile.

In the years that followed he served in a variety of parishes in Alabama, North Carolina and Vermont, including Queen of Peace Parish in Selma and Immaculate Conception in Orrville.

He is survived by one brother, Paul Sheehey of Burlington, VT; by two sisters, Joan Pfiefer of Marshfield, VT, and Joyce Stanton of Ormond Beach, FL; and by a host of nephews, nieces and great-nephews, including Tim Sheehey of Selma; and of course by his spiritual brothers in the Society of Saint Edmund.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Selma during the week.

Later this spring Father Sheehey’s ashes will be interred beside those of his parents at Resurrection Park in South Burlington, VT, and

a memorial Mass is celebrated in the Chapel of Saint Michael’s

College, his alma mater

in Colchester, VT.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Edmundite Southern Missions, 1428 Broad Street, Selma, AL

36701.
